Hello everyone, and welcome to Cortney's Corner for September 2002! :) Summer is coming to it's end, but Elvis fans are still partying! :) Elvis Week 2002 was WONDERFUL! My Fiance' Arik and I (yep that's right, engaged now!!) went and had a great time, meeting up with old friends and making new ones! :) I'm not here to write about Elvis Week though, I'm here to tell you about Canada's own, Robin Kelly!
When I heard Robin Kelly was now an official performing Elvis Tribute Artist, I was surprised. I have known Robin for at least 5 years...how you ask? Well he was always with Darren (Lee, his brother) in Memphis, and at a few shows Darren had done in Michigan. Robin always sat back and had fun, but he was shy about singing and when he did, he was kind of quiet! I heard that had all changed and now he was out on the prowl! I used to see Robin at the Jam Sessions that Darren started up at the Four Points Hotel (now Holiday Inn Select) in Memphis every night after the Images Of The King Contest. He always had fun and helped everyone else have a good time. The first time I really became friends with Robin, was at a show in Michigan. After the show, and back at the hotel, Robin visited with myself, my friend Jennie, my mom and dad. We talked about times in Memphis, about this and that, and had fun. We ended up sitting in the lobby until at least 3am, if not later, talking with Robin and just laughing and having a good time.
Recently, I got his email address when I seen him on Lady Luck, and got back in contact with Robin again. I had heard about him doing shows through Melody up in Canada, and wanted to talk with him again. Robin is a very down to earth kind of guy, and is genuine. He took first place this past July in the Collingwood Elvis Festival 2002. A fairly new ETA to the scene and already a HUGE first place win! Way to go Robin!
At the hotel in Memphis this year, Arik and I had just gotten in pretty late after being out on EP BLVD, and when we walked in there stood Robin, chatting with Mario (from Englad). I said "I think I know you..." and he said "Hey I think I know you too!" We said hello, gave a hug, and I introduced Arik to Robin. He was very friendly still and down to earth just like the Robin I used to always see there in Memphis. I didn't see Robin perform in the prelims of the Images contest, because I didn't attend until the finals. What I seen in finals was a GREAT performance! Robin protrayed the 50s Elvis and he had the moves down pat! I was saying it was weird to see him moving all over the stage now, after knowing his shyness the years before! Robin seems to have really picked up some fans too! He is more then just Darren Lee's brother (lol), he is Robin Kelly, a star in his own!
