The very first Super - Showcase was in 2001 and wow was it ever special! It was offered up as an alternative to a contest. Would fans still show up for two days of Elvis shows without the competition? Would ETAs want to show up here in Montreal and agree to use the potential prize money to pay for hotel rooms and things? A tough decision to make, but we took the chance. We wanted to showcase these ETAs, they accepted and we put the word out to all the fans and besides our web site, got them as much publicity as we could muster. An IMAX movie producer was involved, a local radio station was involved and of course, a visit from the local national TV and the newspapers! It was special indeed! This was the first time we were to hear the power of Jesse Aron's incredible vocals, or see the magic of Jersey's Jim Barone serving up his fifties Elvis. Watching Peter Alden work the room was just mesmerizing, not to mention his wit that kept the audience laughing and his beautiful voice. Johnny Thompson was just dynamite with the ladies and so was his protégé, a young William Stiles who really sounded just like Elvis Presley. Michael Hoover was the class - the seasoned professional, the entertainer and Luc Bouffard was there, a very popular local (Montreal) Elvis who held up well amongst the all American line-up except for the Ontario boy, Elvis sound-a-like and future People’s Choice winner Jay Zanier. Chicago's Ron Starr wasn’t a Beatle yet and did an amazingly electrifying set, and Johnny Loos was just beginning to build his reputation internationally.
Unfortunately, we lost the files and web work that was done on this memorable show in a bad server crash, however, we are slowly putting this event back together using captures from film that were taken there. The alumni of Showcase performers includes some of the biggest names in Elvis entertainment today, and the whole new wave of young “Presleys” have already had their first experience with a Montreal audience, which is noted to be the best, most receptive and most appreciative audience in the world, inspiring the ETAs who have graced our stages to pursue their careers with the utmost confidence that they can succeed!
