Brian Hyland, of course, will be forever associated with the song “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” which remains one of the most successful novelty songs ever – even nudging out Elvis’ “It’s Now or Never” for top spot on the charts in l960.
However, Brian is an accomplished singer and musician who has also recorded many other songs, and has toured the world performing his hits along with a wide variety of classic rock and roll songs, and much more, as he’s equally adept at delivering some very fine rock and country rock, pop rock and pop soul music.
I thoroughly enjoyed Brian Hyland’s dynamic performance.
A long time friend of Bobby Vee’s (in fact Bobby’s 3rd son is named Robby Bryon, after his Dad and Brian Hyland), Brian was accompanied on stage by his partner Rosmari and his son Bodi, on drums. Of course, he couldn’t get away without singing “Itsy Bitsy,” and soon he also had us reminiscing further as we listened to “Sealed With A Kiss,” his other memorable hit “summer” song. I very much enjoyed hearing two of Brian’s hit songs from the later years too -- “The Joker Went Wild” (one of my personal favourites) and “Gypsy Woman.” And his dynamite versions of “Long Tall Sally” and the rockin’ “Good Golly Miss Molly” would surely have given Little Richard a run for his money!
Brian said he always looks forward to coming to Canada and I hope he’ll be back soon! Judging by the cheers I heard from the audience after his performance, I know I’m not the only one who would like to see Brian Hyland again!
